North South University (NSU), with support from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh, hosted Dhaka–China Day 2025 to celebrate the enduring friendship between Bangladesh and China.

Held at Audi 801 and the main auditorium, the day-long program brought together scholars, policymakers, students and cultural ambassadors for dialogue, cultural exchange and performances.

The event opened with a traditional lion dance, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Vice chancellor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury highlighted that NSU was the first university in South Asia to establish a Confucius Institute, which continues to play a pivotal role in language training, student exchanges and cultural initiatives.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen expressed confidence that bilateral relations would reach “new heights,” underscoring youth engagement and people-to-people exchanges. Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Farida Akhter emphasized opportunities in trade, fisheries and technology while NSU trustee board member Benajir Ahmed noted China’s role in Bangladesh’s infrastructure and economic growth.

Two technical sessions examined education, media, and language, with experts discussing the portrayal of China in Bangladeshi media, digital consumption patterns and the growing demand for Mandarin in trade and employment. Challenges such as teacher shortages and limited curriculum integration were addressed, with calls for stronger policy support and early language education.

The China–Bangladesh Youth Forum brought together academics and students from both nations to share insights on higher education, cultural adaptation, economic cooperation, and people-to-people ties.

Celebrations concluded with a three-day Dhaka–China Day Film Festival, screening Chinese and Bangladeshi films including The Truth 1, Ne Zha 1, Utshob and The Truth 2.

Dhaka–China Day 2025 successfully underscored the multifaceted dimensions of Bangladesh–China relations and reaffirmed the importance of sustained cooperation.

To celebrate and deepen the millennia-old cultural ties between China and Bangladesh, “Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Week” has commenced at the Art Gallery of Brac University, as part of the broader “Millennium Cultural Bonds”—China-Bangladesh Cultural Exchange Month.

The event was inaugurated with a grand cultural performance, graced by Brac University vice chancellor Syed Farhat Anwar as the chief guest. Other notable speakers included Md. Wares Hossain, Acting Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Han Zhiqiang, China’s designated cultural heritage bearer, and Li Shaopeng, Cultural Advisor of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh.

In their remarks, the speakers emphasized that the bond between China and Bangladesh extends beyond diplomacy—it is rooted in a shared heritage and enriched by centuries of cultural exchange. They highlighted that intangible cultural heritage forms a timeless bridge between the two nations, uniting past, present, and future.

China, known for having the highest number of UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage elements, showcased exquisite works representing its ancient traditions. The exhibition features traditional handicrafts, musical instruments, and other cultural artifacts, offering visitors a glimpse into the richness of Chinese heritage.

Following the speeches, the event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and exhibition tour.

The exhibition is more than a display—it symbolizes human unity and mutual understanding through cultural dialogue. This Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Week will remain open to visitors until June 26.

24th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition was held in Dhaka, hosted by the Confucius Institute at North South University and the Chinese Embassy

Dhaka, May 30, 2025 — The 24th edition of the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign University Students was held at the auditorium of North South University (NSU) in Dhaka, showcasing the language skills and cultural understanding of Bangladeshi students.

Organized by the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka and implemented by the Confucius Institute at NSU, the event was graced by Li Shaofeng, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, as the chief guest. Other distinguished attendees included NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Dr. Par Modiur Rahman, Registrar of Shanto Mariam University of Creative Technology, and Chinese language educators from both universities.

In his speech, Li Shaofeng emphasized the importance of language in strengthening China-Bangladesh relations. “Learning Chinese is more than just learning a language—it is part of the wave of mutual communication between our two nations,” he said, praising the students’ performances and language skills.

The event also marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh, with Li highlighting the growing political trust, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Dr. Bulbul Siddiqui, Bangladeshi Director of the Confucius Institute at NSU, welcomed participants and noted that the competition plays a key role in fostering cross-cultural understanding and showcasing local talent.

This year’s competition awarded one champion, two runners-up, three third-place winners, and four Excellence Award recipients. The champion will represent Bangladesh in the international finals in China and may qualify for the International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship Project.

Launched in 2002, the Chinese Bridge competition is a flagship event organized by the Chinese and Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center under China’s Ministry of Education. Over the past 23 years, it has connected participants from over 160 countries, promoting global engagement through language learning.

During the visit, the distinguished guests held a cordial meeting with Abdul Hannan Chowdhury vice chancellor of NSU; Abdur Rob Khan treasurer and pro vice chancellor (In-Charge); Bulbul Siddiqi director of the Confucius Institute at NSU; and Sk. Tawfique M. Haque director of the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG).
