AIUB Hosts Landmark International Symposium on Responsive and Responsible Universities
American International University–Bangladesh (AIUB) successfully hosted a two-day International Symposium on “Responsive and Responsible University: Global Perspectives from the Magna Charta Observatory Research Initiative” on 25–26 September at its campus in Dhaka.
This landmark event marked a historic milestone for Bangladesh’s higher education sector, bringing together leading academic voices to advance the global dialogue on university governance, accountability and quality education.
Organized by AIUB’s Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in collaboration with the Magna Charta Observatory (MCO), the symposium welcomed more than 150 participants, including vice-chancellors, pro-vice-chancellors, IQAC directors, and senior academics from top universities in Bangladesh, alongside distinguished representatives from Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and North Macedonia.
The inaugural session featured insightful speeches by Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna member of AIUB’s board of trustees and David J. Lock secretary general of the Magna Charta Observatory. Honored guests included Dr. Hasanul A. Hasan founding board member of AIUB and Ishtiaque Abedin founding board member of AIUB and secretary general of Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB) along with faculty, officials and international delegates.
Panel discussions brought together eminent leaders, including Professor Dr. Mohammad Anwar Hossen, Member of the University Grants Commission (UGC); Professor Dr. Mesbahuddin Ahmed, Chairman of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) and vice-chancellors of renowned private universities. In addition, AIUB students showcased their research, adding youthful perspectives to the academic exchange.
Throughout the two days, the symposium highlighted the critical role of global collaboration in shaping universities that are both responsive to societal needs and responsible in upholding international standards of quality education and governance.
About Magna Charta Universitatum
Magna Charta Universitatum (Great Charter of Universities) is a two-page document produced by the University of Bologna and the European Rectors’ Conference (now called the European University Association) in 1988 in Bologna, Italy. It identifies key principles that are asserted to be essential for the operation of universities, including academic freedom and institutional autonomy. Initially signed by the rectors of 388 higher education institutions, the number of signatories has subsequently grown to about 1000, with the aim to recognize and celebrate university traditions and to encourage cooperation among European universities. The document is intended to serve as a universal inspiration and is as such open to universities throughout the world and not only those located in Europe.
