IUB Observes World Pharmacists Day 2025 with Seminar on “Think Health, Think Pharmacist”

Dhaka, September 24, 2025 — The Department of Pharmacy under the School of Pharmacy and Public Health (SPPH) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a seminar on Wednesday at the IUB Auditorium to celebrate World Pharmacists Day 2025.

This year’s theme, “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” launched by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), highlights the crucial role of pharmacists in advancing sustainable healthcare.

Distinguished Guests Highlight the Role of Pharmacists

The seminar was graced by Professor Dr. SMA Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, as the chief guest. He praised IUB’s well-equipped Department of Pharmacy and emphasized opportunities for growth through industry–academia collaboration.

Didar A Husain, Chairman of IUB’s Board of Trustees, noted that Bangladesh, though a young nation, has the resources to pursue academic excellence. He stressed that pharmacy remains one of the oldest and most essential professions in society.

Trustee Dr. Husne Ara Ali, Vice-Chairman of ESTCDT, recalled her long-cherished vision of a flourishing Department of Pharmacy, realized in 2018. She underscored that pharmacists are indispensable architects of the public health system.

IUB’s Commitment to Pharmacy Education

IUB Vice-Chancellor Professor M. Tamim, who chaired the seminar, reaffirmed IUB’s commitment to strengthening pharmacy education. He noted ongoing efforts to upgrade laboratories, expand industry linkages, and ensure graduates are job ready.

The keynote address was delivered by Md Nasser Shahrear Zahedee, Chairman of Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Head of the Accreditation and Education Committee of the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh. He urged students to embrace their responsibility to serve public welfare through safe and effective healthcare.

Industry and Academic Insights

Speakers at the seminar included:

  • Muhammad Mahbubul Haq, Secretary of the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh, who stressed the need to appoint pharmacists in government hospitals.
  • Professor Dr. Md. Selim Reza, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka, who reflected on the success of the 1982 drug policy and future challenges beyond 2026.
  • Professor Dr. Md. Shah Amran of IUB, who presented a five-point demand for national recognition of the pharmacy profession, including making pharmacy a cadre service and expanding hospital and community pharmacy.

Student Voices: Building a Future in Pharmacy

Representing IUB students, Sanjida Mizi, Vice President of the IUB Pharma Club, spoke on the pharmacist’s responsibility to ensure safe medicine use and accessible healthcare for all.

Earlier in the program, Dr. Nasrin Akhter, Head of the Department of Pharmacy, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Kamran Ul Baset, Dean of SPPH, offered the vote of thanks.

The event was attended by senior IUB officials including Pro-VC Professor Daniel W. Lund, Treasurer Khandker Md. Iftekhar Haider, Registrar Asif Parvez, Controller of Examinations Tapos Sarkar, Librarian Md. Shahajada Masud Anowarul Haque, Director of Council Affairs Ashraful Amin, Deputy Director of HR Shibli Hussain Ahmad, and Director of Operations A. S. M. Shah Alam, along with faculty members and students.
